The Ijen Java Raung Coffee Community in Bondowoso is making major progress toward sustainable coffee production, blending traditional farming wisdom with modern environmental practices. Nestled between the volcanic slopes of Mount Ijen and Mount Raung, the community has become a model for eco-conscious coffee cultivation in East Java.
Over the past year, the community has implemented a series of initiatives designed to protect the land, improve farmer livelihoods, and ensure long-term coffee quality. These include:
🌱 Organic-based farming methods, replacing synthetic fertilizers with compost and natural mulching.
💧 Water-efficient wet processing, reducing water waste during fermentation and washing stages.
🌳 Reforestation efforts across the upper slopes, planting shade and fruit trees to protect biodiversity and soil health.
♻️ Recycling and waste management programs that encourage farmers to reuse materials and minimize plastic use.
“Our sustainability journey is not just about growing coffee — it’s about protecting our mountains, our water, and our community,” said Marwan Achmad, coordinator of the Ijen Java Raung Coffee Community. “We believe that truly great coffee can only come from a healthy environment.”
The community has partnered with local cooperatives and export companies to promote traceable, eco-friendly coffee lots, ensuring buyers can directly connect with the farmers behind each harvest. Training sessions on climate resilience and post-harvest innovation have also empowered younger farmers to adopt greener methods without compromising cup quality.
Early results are promising: several farms have already reported lower water usage and improved soil fertility, while cupping scores remain consistently high — averaging 84–86 points.
With international buyers increasingly prioritizing sustainability, Ijen Java Raung coffee is positioning itself as a leading origin that represents both environmental stewardship and premium quality.
