Bondowoso, East Java — October 2025.
The coffee community in Bondowoso, especially around the Ijen–Raung highlands, continues to gain international attention for its commitment to sustainable coffee farming and community-driven growth. Local cooperatives and smallholder farmers have joined forces to improve coffee quality, environmental practices, and global market access.
Over the past year, Ijen Java Raung Coffee Community has implemented several initiatives focusing on soil health, shade-grown coffee, and reduced water use during the post-harvest process. These practices not only protect the environment but also improve the cup quality of Bondowoso’s signature Arabica beans.
“We want to ensure that every cup of Bondowoso coffee reflects our land, our people, and our care for nature,” said Eko Prasetyo, one of the young farmers leading the local sustainability project. “Our goal is not only to sell coffee but to share our story and values with the world.”
The community also collaborates with local exporters and international buyers to develop transparent and traceable supply chains. Through regular cupping sessions, farmer training, and data-driven quality control, Bondowoso coffee has achieved consistent recognition for its bright acidity, chocolate notes, and clean finish.
This year, the cooperative plans to expand its organic certification and introduce eco-friendly processing methods, including natural and honey processes that minimize water waste.
Bondowoso’s growing reputation as a “Java’s hidden gem” has attracted interest from specialty coffee roasters in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, marking a new chapter for sustainable coffee in Indonesia.
