Bondowoso, East Java — October 10, 2025.
The Ijen Java Raung Coffee Community continues to gain attention among local farmers and international buyers for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and collaboration. Located on the fertile volcanic slopes between Mount Ijen and Mount Raung, the community represents one of the most active coffee-growing movements in East Java.
Founded by a group of smallholder farmers, the community has developed a system that focuses on traceability, post-harvest consistency, and eco-friendly practices. The area’s volcanic soil and high altitude — ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 meters above sea level — create ideal conditions for producing premium Arabica beans with bright acidity and floral notes.
“Our mission is to make Ijen–Raung coffee recognized globally for both quality and sustainability,” said Marwan Achmad, one of the coordinators of the local coffee initiative. “We encourage collaboration between farmers, exporters, and roasters to bring out the best from this region.”
Over the past year, the community has introduced new training programs on fermentation techniques, moisture control, and defect reduction, ensuring every lot meets export-grade standards. Several micro-lots have already achieved cupping scores above 84 points, attracting interest from buyers in Turkey, Egypt, and Europe.
In addition to quality improvement, the Ijen Java Raung Coffee Community actively supports environmental restoration by planting shade trees and managing water sources responsibly. Collaboration with youth groups and local cooperatives has also increased awareness about sustainable farming among the next generation of coffee growers.
With continued support from both domestic and international partners, Ijen Java Raung coffee is steadily becoming a symbol of Bondowoso’s dedication to ethical and high-quality coffee production.
